September 12, 2006Why Kisko? While looking through comments that got sent to my overly-aggressive link-spam filter, I found one that I thought was quite funny:
The short answer is of course that I was invited to Kisko by someone who has a house there. But, apart from that, I am a fan of small places. One of my most pleasant memories of France was the country side in Champaign. Boppard has topped my list in Germany. In US, I have fond memories of Hoquiam, WA. In Belgium, while Ghent is hardly a little village, it is a lot less known than the nearby Brugge and I thus liked it more. I am not a huge fan of wilderness, but I like seeing places that seem stuck in time. In Beijing, I found the hutong most interesting. (I am of course fully aware of the difficulties of life without running water and am not glorifying the hutong.) Amuzingly, when talking to someone in Vladivostok about Beijing I head them say: "I didn't like Beijing. It's all fake. There is a beautiful façade of modern buildings, but once you step behind you see the ugly dirty alleys." The "beautiful façade of modern buildings" is what I found precisely least exciting about Beijing. (Shanghai's over-the-top modern architecture makes it interesting as a kind of "city of the future". Beijing's modern architecture makes it look like a generic 20th city century.) Filed under: Kisko , Finland and Sweden Summer 2004 Comments

I was especially impressed by the ceilings. Filed under: Finland and Sweden Summer 2004 , Turku CommentsPlease leave your comments. August 3, 2004Stockholm from AboveThose photos were taken from the top of the cathedral in the middle of Gamla Stan. Going up the narrow stairs of the bell tower and then looking at the city from above was the second coolest thing in Stockholm after Vasa. The photos have been uploaded to the gallery last week but I didn't have time to feature them here due to moving. July 26, 2004Change of the Guards in Front of the Royal Palace in StockholmThe change of the guards in front of the Royal Palace involved a rather amusing combination of prancing and hopping in circles for about 30 minutes. Perhaps after a bit more practice they could add somersaults to the show? Unfortunately, I couldn't capture the prancing on camera, so the photos make the ceremony look a bit more dignified than it was. July 17, 2004VasaConstructed in 1628, 70 meter long Vasa was one of the largest ships of the time. It was also one of the shortest lived - Vasa sunk within 15 minutes of it's first journey, still in the Stockholm harbor. It lay there until 1960s until it was rediscovered and raised, becoming the centerpiece of Vasamuseet - probably the coolest museum in Stockholm. July 14, 2004First Impressions of StockholmI arrived to Stockholm by boat around 11 a.m. and went for a walk around Gamla Stan ("Old Town"), which still has a few medieval buildings as well as a baroque Royal Palace. (The original royal castle in Stockholm burnt down.) Note the "Järnpojken" - the tiny sculpture of a boy. I heard that people put a hat and a scarf on him in winter.
